What a bleak night. Thats what chose to flitter through my mind as i gazed skyward. It was accompanied by a million other things, but that one thought was brought to focus for some reason.
A dry laugh burst forth, bringing a bit of blood with it which clung to the rags i wore, staining them with crimson jewels. It hurt... Oh how it hurt, but i gritted my teeth and forced every fiber of my being to remain still as a fit of coughing took me. Each cough brought up blood, yet still my lungs felt full. The coughs only served to tense my shattered ribs and make my time all the worse.
In fact that laugh, painful though it was, was the happiest part of my day... Even if shortly after i would pass. A dull throb of agony cut through me like a knife, worsening and worsening... Then blissfully, it began to fade. Shadows crept in on my vision as my broken form gave out under it’s own weigh

Ch:1 Crimson snowflakes
Outside the fogged up window, a single leaf fell from the topmost boughs of an old oak. It spun and twirled, looping through the air in great circular arcs, a ballet hidden in the sky. Below people walked past, fewer in number than they would be in a few months when the thick frost vanished from pavements and streets. Yet even with so few walking, not a single one bothered to cast their gaze upwards... If they had, they would have seen the last of the dancing leaves, it’s brethren long since buried beneath the snow as it clung stubbornly to it’s ancient branch.
They would also have seen the elder tree, one older than everything beneath it’s gaze... Except for the forest to the west. The small sea of greenery splayed across the land, a magnificent sight when first light crested the mountains of the Sierra Nevadas. It’s town was a small one, calling the pop
